New facade development for speculative office building at the Downtown Crown development in Gaithersburg, MD for RPAI / Kite Realty. Situated at the Northwest corner of Downtown Crown in Gaithersburg, MD, the Crown Farm office building will help further diversify the mixed-use offerings in the larger development. As one of the anchors to the development that completes the master plan to the North, shields the parking garage to its East and sits prominently along Fields Road, the project will have an impactful visual and programmatic presence in the neighborhood.
The conceptual design strategy has always been to deliver the contemporary interpretation of a warehouse aesthetic. Complementing the predominantly masonry look of the larger development, Crown Farm draws inspiration from not only The Copley at Crown and Cadence at Crown, but many other well-designed precedents in the region.
A new design has been developed that shifts the aesthetic of the building to more urban industrial warehouse and less suburban office park. Developing a vertical rhythm of gridded “square” windows as opposed to a more horizontal ribbon window approach, the reproportioned façade speaks more to the warehouse aesthetic. Setback and clad in charcoal metal panels, the building entry and reveals at the prominent Northwest and Southwest corners of the project enliven the façade by adding playful, contemporary moments. Large, open storefronts for ground floor retail and the lobby also create an inviting connection to the public realm. Rooted in the original design, the newly refined building adds a measure of clean-lined sophistication that enhances the overall project vision.
