BEIRUT ROMAN BATHS
Beirut, Lebanon
ARCHITECTURE & MASTER PLANNING | COMPETITION
2009 | Competition
As part of the redeveloping Beirut Central District, the invited international Beirut Romans Bath competition set to solicit ideas that help preserve cultural heritage and promote a new and revamped public realm. With a vast archaeological heritage across Beirut, numerous sites within the city have been exposed, preserved and integrated into the public realm. The Roman Baths site is one of the archaeological focal points of the city and is host to one of the city’s main performance venues. Even so, the site has been historically underutilized. With a flexible master plan that respects the archaeology and generates more public activity through accommodation of large gatherings and events, this site could become more integral to the in the daily urban fabric. The proposal focused on varying scales of public gathering space, reintroducing water and vegetation to the site and developing a pedestrian bridge and promenade would strategically link to the surrounding context and prominent historical sites.
